The Land of a Thousand Hills

Mountain Gorillas & Other Primates

Beyond gorillas and volcanoes, Rwanda surprises visitors with classic African safari experiences. The Akagera National Park, located in the country’s east, is the only place in Rwanda where travelers can see the Big Five; Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Leopards, and Rhinos, thriving in their natural habitat. Established in 1934 and covering 1,122 square kilometers, Akagera is a stunning mix of savanna, woodlands, and wetlands. It’s home to a wide variety of animals including giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and hyenas, along with over 500 bird species such as the rare shoebill stork and African fish eagle. Visitors can enjoy game drives, birdwatching, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, and night drives to spot nocturnal animals. Akagera is Rwanda’s wild heart — a perfect complement to the lush rainforests and mountain adventures in the west.

The Majestic Virunga Volcanoes

Rwanda’s adventure spirit is perfectly captured in the dramatic Volcanoes Mountains also known locally as the Mufumbiro Mountains. Of the eight Virunga Volcanoes, five rise proudly within Rwanda’s borders inside Volcanoes National Park:

Mount Karisimbi (4,507m)
