Rwanda’s mountain gorillas are among the world’s most remarkable wildlife treasures. These gentle giants are the only great apes whose population is steadily increasing, thanks to strong conservation efforts. Found only in Volcanoes National Park, they offer one of Africa’s most powerful and emotional wildlife encounters.
Home of the world’s remaining 1,063 mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area , shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park hosts 12 habituated gorilla families, giving travelers the rare opportunity to observe these majestic primates up close.
Just a 2–3 hour scenic drive from Kigali, this lush rainforest was also the research base of the legendary primatologist Dian Fossey, whose groundbreaking work helped protect gorillas for generations to come.
